NBC Universal's unprecedented depth of coverage from the 2008 Beijing Games featured some of the most dramatic sporting events in history.
NBC Universal framed its presentation within five broadcast and cable channels (three in High Definition), extensive live streaming online video, a live mobile video channel, mobile alerts and the most comprehensive web site in Olympics history.
BROADCAST
Beginning with soccer games on August 6th -- two days before the Opening Ceremony -- and concluding with the Closing Ceremony on August 24th, NBC Universal offered an estimated 1,200 hours of coverage across its NBC network and various cable stations.
Broadcasting from Beijing, 12 hours ahead of Eastern Time, live nightly primetime shows featured Michael Phelps' record-breaking swimming achievements, as well as marquee competition from gymnastics and beach volleyball venues.
Extensive cable coverage was offered on USA, MSNBC, CNBC and Oxygen, with high-definition broadcasts on NBC's HD affiliates, USA HD and Universal HD. Spanish-language coverage was provided by Telemundo.
DIGITAL
Whether it was mobile, On Demand, or web-based content, NBC Olympics' digital platforms delivered some of the most wide-ranging event coverage in media history.
On NBCOlympics.com, users were able to "localize" their Olympic experience in order to receive detailed, filterable TV listings specific to NBC affiliates and cable/satellite providers. In addition, NBCOlympics.com offered more than 3,500 hours of exclusive video (2,200 hours of which were streamed live), full-event replays, in-depth athlete profiles, two-screen companion applications, and a rich gaming experience -- all free during the Beijing Games.
Powered by MSN's Silverlight technology, NBCOlympics.com's video allowed users to further customize their experience, allowing for picture-in-picture functionality, simultaneous views of multiple events, on-screen alert settings, and more. This Olympic video was also available on mobile devices and via cable On Demand platforms.
